Postcards from Miss Lougheed
To celebrate going back to school in January, our online exhibit features correspondence to Miss Laura Lougheed. These are postcards written from former students to keep in touch after Miss Lougheed had switched teaching positions. Miss. Lougheed, an Irish-Canadian Methodist teacher born in 1889, taught in Gravenhurst before moving to Port Carling. In the 1911 Canadian Census, she is listed as one of four lodgers at 107 Joseph Street in Port Carling.
Edna W.
This is a postcard written by Edna W. to Miss Lougheed and posted June 28th, 1911 in Gravenhurst. It reads:
”Dear teacher, Mr. Morgan is at Gravenhurst school now. Our last paper is this afternoon (Geography). I have not been nervous so far. Edna W.” The image depicts the Gravenhurst Town Hall.
William Gauddin
This postcard depicts Lake Clementi, Brandon’s Summer Resort in Manitoba and was posted on February 5th, 1910 in Aspdin. It reads:
”dear miss L. L. lougheed are you having any sleigh rides. We have lots of snow up heare. this is all for this time. so right soon from William L. Gauddin”.

This is a postcard posted August 12h, 1910 in Port Carling. It reads:
”Dear Teacher, – I received your card O.K. I havn’t seen Vinie until the 1st. of July. I havn’t been on a picnic since we were on one. I was going out to pick huckle berries this morning but Mary’s mother changed her mind and couldn’t snape her.” The image is captioned “On Lake Joseph, Muskoka Lakes, Canada”.

This postcard depicts “A Typical Scene on Muskoka Lakes, Canada” with moonlit islands and a steamer. It was posted on June 22nd, 1910 from Gravenhurst. It reads:
”Dear Miss Lougheed: We have had four subjects already I wrote on “a day at a friends” Hilda.”
