Educational Programs & Events Assistant

Length: May 13 – August 23

Wage: $18/ per hour

Job Description

The Muskoka Lakes Museum regularly runs a number of programs and special events for visitors and members. These programs include: two Open Houses, our Summer Lecture Series, fundraisers, and weekly programs for visitors of all ages. The objective of the Educational Programs & Events Assistant is to conceptualize, plan and execute these programs and events in order to promote heritage and cultural learning.

Job Tasks

  • Assisting in planning, developing, and executing programs and special events.
  • Leading and executing weekday and weekend programming for children of various ages.
  • Contacting vendors, speakers, advertisers, and other third parties involved in programs.
  • Conducting tours catered to specific ages.
  • Developing a social media and website presence for events and programs.
  • Visitor desk duties including: admission, membership, donation and gift shop sales; stocking and managing the gift shop; tracking number of visitors; and answering inquiries regarding artifacts and galleries.
  • Other relevant tasks as assigned by the Museum Manager.

Requirements

  • Asset: Working toward a program in Education, Museum Studies, Event Planning, or a related field.
  • Asset: Having worked with children in a day camp and/or museum setting. 
  • Interest in and/or experience in event planning.
  • Interest in and/or experience in public programs
  • Computer literacy with Microsoft Suites, Dropbox, social media platforms and Canva.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with various age groups.
  • Highly self-motivated and outgoing.
  • Standard First Aid (by start of employment).

This position is dependent on funding from Young Canada Works in Heritage Organization. As such applicants must be:

  • Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are noneligible).
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number).
  • Between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and are a high school, college, CEGEP or university student.

Collections & Curatorial Assistant 

Length: May 20 – August 30

Wage: $18/ per hour

Job Description

Muskoka Lakes Museum stores and exhibits close to five thousand artifacts and archival materials related to the history and culture of Muskoka lakes area. The objective of the Collection & Curatorial Assistant is to interpret, preserve, catalogue, digitize and exhibit these collections through updated records, online platforms and gallery tours to foster public engagement and learning of the area’s local cultural heritage


Job Tasks

  • Creating/scheduling online exhibits for the 2026/2027 off-season.
  • Managing “Throwback Thursdays” social media posts related to the collection and exhibits.
  • Cataloguing the collection and digitizing records/archives.
  • Conducting research as requested by public/commercial interests.
  • Aiding the Museum Manager in accessioning artifacts and maintaining the collections.
  • Visitor desk duties including: admission, membership, donation, and gift shop sales; stocking and managing the gift shop; and answering inquiries regarding artifacts and galleries.
  • Other relevant tasks as assigned by the Museum Manager.

Requirements

  • Asset: Having/working toward a program in Museum Studies, Conservation, Archaeology, History, or a related field.
  • Asset: Experience with PastPerfect or other cataloguing software
  • Asset: Ability to assist in lifting items over 30lbs
  • Interest in and/or experience in curating.
  • Interest in and/or experience in collections management.
  • Computer literacy with Microsoft Suites, Dropbox, Canva and various social media platforms.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and outgoing.
