Dogs of Muskoka
In this month’s exhibit, the Muskoka Lakes Museum is showcasing the various dogs of Muskoka from the late 1800s to today! Just like their people, there are a number of things dogs get up to in Muskoka: work, play, boating, sleeping, and swimming. This is just a sneak peak at what some Muskoka dogs have gotten up to over the ages.
Dogs at Work
These photographs all show dogs at work during the wintertime. The first shows Jack Croucher and two dogs accompanying horse-drawn sledges carrying firewood. The caption on the back dates the photo to 1918.
The other images show sled dogs at the Honey Harbor Dog Derby. These dogs were owned by Marjorie King, one of the racers.
Bobby
These are all photos of Bobby, a dog who features heavily in a family photo album in the museum’s collection. Bobby, also known more familiarly as ”His Nobs”, appears throughout the album with photographs both with other family members and on his own.
Dogs Out and About
These are photos of dogs out and about in Muskoka with their people. The first photograph, featuring two children and a dog, was taken from a photo album from 1925-1927.
The next image is of a dog attending a picnic, which was taken around 1888 in Bala.
The last image is of Edith Stollery and Mrs. Burgess’ St. Bernard, Bruno, on the Port Sandfield swing bridge in 1910.
Dogs on the Go
This is a collection of photographs showing dogs on the move in Muskoka. The first shows seven people and one dog all crammed into a car for a photo.
Next is Bobby, the dog we featured previously helping steer a sailboat. In the album where this image is pasted, it is captioned “The Skipper” and is unclear it’s in reference to the human or to Bobby’s excellent boating skills!
The final photograph shows a dog riding in the back of the motorboat Hunkydory.
